The Greater Accra leadership of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) has reaffirmed its support for the nationwide strike declared by the three teacher unions.
The regional leadership has directed teachers to remain off duty, insisting that the industrial action will continue until the government addresses their outstanding concerns.
Speaking at a joint press briefing at the GNAT Greater Accra Regional Secretariat, GNAT Regional Secretary, Cosmos Ennu Kwaw, said the strike had become necessary because the government had failed to satisfactorily resolve key issues affecting teachers.
He identified the immediate concerns as the automatic placement of teachers who have passed promotion examinations, the conclusion of negotiations on a new collective agreement and the implementation of a 20% deprived-area allowance.
Mr Kwaw said teachers who successfully completed the required promotion examinations should be placed on the appropriate salary levels without further delay, in line with established practice.
He also called for the implementation of an agreement reached on August 31, 2026, between the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service and the teacher unions, stressing that the agreement must be honoured without alterations or conditions.
On the new collective agreement, he urged all parties involved in the negotiations to demonstrate greater commitment and accelerate discussions to bring the process to a conclusion.
The Greater Accra leadership has further cautioned teachers against returning to the classroom prematurely, saying any decision to suspend or modify the strike will be communicated through the unions’ official channels.
GNAT, NAGRAT and PRETAG declared the nationwide strike on September 25, 2026, citing unresolved concerns over teachers’ conditions of service, promotion and the deprived-area allowance.
