Ampofo Ankrah Declines Parliament Appearance Until CID Probe Is Completed

Suspended National Sports Authority (NSA) Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah says he will not appear before Parliament to answer allegations against him until the Ghana Police Service concludes its investigation into the matter.

In a statement issued through his lawyer on Thursday, October 8, Mr Ampofo Ankrah said appearing before Parliament while the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is conducting an investigation could prejudice the process and interfere with the work of investigators.

“It would be imprudent for Mr Ampofo Ankrah to appear before Parliament in relation to matters that are presently the subject of the CID investigation,” his lawyer stated.

The legal team, however, stressed that the decision should not be construed as a refusal by Mr Ampofo Ankrah to account to Parliament or any other constitutionally mandated institution.

According to the statement, Mr Ampofo Ankrah has cooperated with the police and remains committed to assisting investigators in establishing the facts surrounding the allegations.

His lawyer also appealed to the public and the media to exercise restraint, cautioning against treating allegations and speculation as established facts.

The legal team further emphasised that the ongoing police investigation should not be interpreted as a finding of wrongdoing against Mr Ampofo Ankrah or any other individual.

The statement comes amid growing scrutiny of the NSA over allegations surrounding arrangements for Ghana’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Minority in Parliament has alleged possible visa fraud in connection with the arrangements, including claims that money was collected from applicants, official lists were altered and fictitious positions were created to facilitate visa applications.

The Minority has called for investigations and accountability from officials associated with the process, including the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, and Mr Ampofo Ankrah.

President John Dramani Mahama has since directed Mr Ampofo Ankrah to step aside while the police investigate the allegations.

The Minority has maintained that individuals found culpable should face appropriate sanctions, including prosecution where warranted.

Mr Ampofo Ankrah’s lawyer said his client will respond fully to the substantive allegations once the police investigation has been completed and its findings formally made public.

The lawyer added that should Mr Ampofo Ankrah’s suspension be lifted and he be reinstated, he will comply with any lawful requirement to appear before Parliament or any other competent institution.
