DVLA Begins Testing RFID-Enabled Number Plates for 2027 Rollout

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has begun piloting new Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID)-enabled vehicle number plates ahead of their planned nationwide rollout in 2027.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Authority, Julius Neequaye Kotey, said the new plates are expected to modernise vehicle registration, improve access to vehicle information and strengthen law enforcement through technology capable of providing information in real time.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, October 12, 2026, Mr Kotey disclosed that the concepts and designs for the new plates had been completed and were undergoing testing ahead of their nationwide introduction.

“We have completed the concepts and designs of the new radio frequency identification-enabled number plates. Currently, the new number plate is being piloted ahead of nationwide rollout in 2027,” .

He explained that the designs were developed entirely by the DVLA’s in-house team, without the involvement of external consultants, resulting in no consultancy fees for the project.

“The designs of these new number plates were carried out by the staff of DVLA. There was no consultancy fee and no external influence over the designs. It was led and completed by an in-house team,” he added.

Mr Kotey said the RFID technology would enable the plates to carry information that could assist law enforcement agencies in identifying vehicles and supporting investigations into criminal activities.

“The RFID technology provides the opportunity for vehicle number plates to carry information that would be useful for law enforcement in the event of crime,” he stated.

He added that the system could be integrated with electronic road tolling and traffic enforcement technologies being deployed by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service.

The DVLA is also planning to decentralise number plate embossing to all regional offices as part of efforts to reduce delays in vehicle registration and improve service delivery to motorists across the country.

The planned 2027 rollout forms part of the Authority’s broader efforts to modernise its operations through technology and improve vehicle identification and regulatory enforcement.
