Mahama Allocates GH¢300m for 250 Police Apartments in 2027 Budget

President John Dramani Mahama has directed Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson to make provision for GH¢300 million in the 2027 national budget to construct 250 apartments for police officers, as part of efforts to address overcrowding in police barracks.

The proposed housing project is aimed at improving the welfare of personnel and providing officers with better living conditions.

President Mahama announced the initiative on Tuesday, October 13, while speaking at the commissioning of the ultramodern 85-bed ward complex at the Ghana Police Hospital in Accra.

He said the planned investment in accommodation would complement other government interventions to improve the welfare, safety and operational effectiveness of the Ghana Police Service.

“I’ve requested the Minister of Finance to provide GH¢300 million in the 2027 budget to construct 250 new apartments for the police to ease congestion in some of your barracks,” the President stated.

In addition to the housing initiative, President Mahama outlined plans to enhance the operational capabilities of the police through the provision of more armoured vehicles and protective equipment.

He disclosed that a second batch of 40 armoured vehicles was expected to arrive in the coming weeks, following the delivery of 50 vehicles to the service in December 2025.

The President also announced that the government was procuring additional body armour to strengthen the protection of officers deployed on operational assignments.

According to him, the planned investments in housing, security equipment and healthcare infrastructure form part of broader efforts to improve police personnel’s welfare and create conditions that enable them to discharge their duties safely and effectively.

The proposed apartments, once funded and constructed, are expected to help reduce pressure on existing police barracks while providing additional accommodation for personnel.
