The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaibu, has appealed to the Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, to allocate five dedicated Metro Mass Transit buses to the constituency to help address ongoing public transportation challenges.
In a petition to the minister, the MP proposed that three buses be assigned to the Weija-to-Accra route, while the remaining two serve commuters travelling from Gbawe to Accra. The request, he said, is intended to improve access to reliable and affordable transportation for residents.
Shaibu explained that the rapid population growth in communities such as Weija, Gbawe, Tetegu and Oblogo, alongside rising commuter numbers, had placed considerable strain on the existing transport system.
He noted that commuters regularly face long waiting times and overcrowding at transport terminals, particularly during the morning and evening rush hours. The situation, he said, creates difficulties for workers, traders, students and elderly residents who depend on public transport for their daily activities.
According to the MP, the challenges are especially pronounced along the Weija-to-Accra and Gbawe-to-Accra routes, where thousands of people struggle to secure transportation to the capital and other major economic centres.
He further warned that the limited availability of dependable public transport had pushed some commuters to rely on unlicensed commercial vehicles and overloaded tricycles, exposing them to potential road safety hazards.
Shaibu said the situation was negatively affecting residents’ productivity, safety and overall well-being, stressing the need for urgent government intervention to improve transportation services across the constituency.
Making his appeal to the Transport Minister, the MP urged the government to prioritise the deployment of the buses through Metro Mass Transit Limited.
“It is in light of the foregoing that I respectfully appeal to your good office to direct Metro Mass Transit Limited to station five (5) dedicated buses within the Weija-Gbawe Constituency as a matter of priority,” he stated.
