NIA Arrests Six Staff, Dismisses Seven Over Alleged Ghana Card Registration Extortion

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has arrested six staff members and terminated the appointments of seven others over alleged extortion during the free Ghana Card registration exercise for children aged six to 14 at the Galaka registration centre in the Upper East Region.

In a statement, the Authority said the six staff members were arrested by the Bawku West District Police after some parents identified them as individuals who allegedly demanded money before registering their children.

The suspects are currently assisting the police with investigations, the NIA disclosed.

The Authority also announced the termination of the appointments of seven other members of the registration team for allegedly having knowledge of the misconduct but failing to report it.

The decision was contained in a press release dated October 29, 2026, and signed by the Head of the Corporate Affairs Directorate, Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas. It followed an internal review of the alleged extortion at the registration centre.

The NIA reiterated that Ghana Card registration must be carried out in accordance with approved procedures, stressing that no staff member is authorised to demand unauthorised payments from applicants or their parents.

It further assured the public that allegations of misconduct would be treated seriously and that disciplinary measures would continue to be enforced to safeguard the integrity of its registration processes.

The Authority has urged members of the public to report suspected misconduct through its official channels to ensure that registration services are delivered fairly, transparently and professionally.
