Sickle cell disease is an inherited group of blood disorders, which contort into a sickle shape. The cells die early, leaving a shortage of healthy red blood cells, and can block blood flow causing pain
Nurses in charge of the sickle cell unit at the Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital, Shadrack Dadson and Samuel Nkrumah addressing “Sickle Cell Disease” earlier today on the ‘AM Ghana Show explained that sickle Cell is an inherited disease from parents with traits of the S cell.
According to Nurse Shadrack Dadson, the cure for sickle cell disease is a bone marrow transplant and it can be managed, so patients should adhere to their drug regime.
Nurse Samuel Nkrumah also from the Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital explained how a sickle cell can be diagnosed. He went on to confirm that sickle cell can be identified through laboratory investigation
He further explained that symptoms normally come with pains and the lack of oxygen to the organs which causes the area to diminish with oxygen.
Nurse Shadrack again said the sickle cell hemoglobin has a life span of 10 to 20 days whiles the normal cell has a life span of 100 to 120 days after which the red blood cells of sickle patients break faster which leads to anemia.
