Over GHC287m unaccounted for by Bank of Ghana – Ato Forson reveals

According to the Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Central Bank of Ghana spent a total of GHS287.833 million in the year 2022 but is unable to provide details of what the money was specifically used for.

This claim was made during a press conference held at the headquarters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on August 8.

Dr. Ato Forson referred to the 2022 Annual Report and Financial Statement of the Bank as the basis for his assertion. He criticized the Central Bank for its lack of transparency and accountability in this matter.

In the 2022 Annual Report, the Central Bank recorded an expenditure of GHS287.833 million under the category of “Other administrative expenses” without providing specific details of the expenses. This was in contrast to the previous year, where such expenses were recorded at GHS108.661 million, indicating a significant increase in unexplained spending.

Furthermore, Dr. Ato Forson highlighted other expenditures from the report, such as personnel costs, foreign and domestic travel, and motor vehicle maintenance/running.

In light of these concerns, along with the substantial loss of GH¢60.8 billion recorded in the same report, the Minority in Parliament has called for the removal of the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison, as well as his deputies, Dr. Maxwell Opoku-Afari (1st Deputy Governor) and Mrs. Elsie Addo Awadzi (2nd Deputy Governor). The Minority’s criticisms center around perceived mismanagement, lack of transparency, and potential corruption within the Central Bank.
