Henry Quartey, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, has criticized Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in Accra for their inadequate efforts in addressing issues of indiscipline and poor conditions within the city.
Quartey’s “Let’s Make Greater Accra Work” initiative was introduced to improve road indiscipline, sanitation, and security in Accra. However, despite his policies and efforts, the city’s conditions have worsened, as seen by the continued presence of litter on streets, tricycles operating on major routes, and other problems.
During a meeting with the MMDCEs, Quartey expressed his disappointment in the state of the Greater Accra Region and questioned the effectiveness and commitment of those in these positions. He highlighted several concerns, including the ongoing presence of freight tricycles, unauthorized commercial activities near the Accra Mall, and unattended garbage in key areas.
Quartey urged officials to self-assess their performance and recognized deteriorating conditions in places like Agbobloshie, where despite previous clearance efforts, refuse continues to accumulate. He also pointed out ongoing challenges in various districts and even mentioned the surprising occurrence of a street vendor selling produce near the residence of former President John Mahama.
The minister emphasized the need for improvement, mentioning issues with litter, tricycles, commercial activities, and other challenges across the region. He called on officials to step up their efforts to make Accra a cleaner and more organized city.
