Ken Agyapong emerges as top NPP presidential contender, according to poll

In a recent GhanaWeb poll concerning the forthcoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) superdelegates congress, online participants have voiced their preferences for the top five contenders they believe should vie for the flagbearership role.

Conducted from Monday, August 7, 2023, to Friday, August 11, 2023, the poll garnered engagement from an impressive 70,000+ participants. The question posed was: “Who would you choose as your candidate in the NPP Super Delegates Congress?”

Among the 70,463 respondents, Kennedy Agyapong, the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, emerged as the frontrunner, securing a substantial lead with 18,475 votes. This figure represents over 26 percent of the total participants.

Taking the second place was Alan Kyerematen, a former Minister for Trade and Industry, who amassed 18,143 votes, accounting for nearly 26 percent of respondents.

An unexpected outcome unfolded as energy expert Kwadwo Nsafoah Poku clinched the third position, garnering 17,041 votes, which translates to more than 24 percent of the participating audience. This outcome was particularly noteworthy due to his outperformance of Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, a prominent contender in the competition.

Vice President Bawumia, securing the fourth spot, garnered 13,131 votes, comprising almost 19 percent of the total respondents.

Claiming the fifth position was former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, who garnered support from 2,042 participants. This accounted for nearly 3 percent of the total respondents, an impressive feat considering the sizable participant pool of over 70,000.

The remaining contenders in the poll, namely former Minister of Justice Joe Ghartey, former Food and Agriculture Minister Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, ex-Member of Parliament for Mampong Francis Addai Nimo, former Minister for Regional Cooperation Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, and former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko, each received less than 1 percent of the total votes cast.

The NPP presidential primaries, scheduled for August and November 2023, will feature 10 contestants.

The NPP’s superdelegates conference is set to take place on August 26, 2023, aimed at narrowing down the contenders to five. Subsequently, the main primaries will occur on November 4, 2023, to determine the party’s presidential candidate for the 2024 elections.
