Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu, has gained recognition for his investigative skills and efforts to hold the Ghanaian government accountable.
Despite not having an official role in investigating financial misappropriations or corruption cases, Ablakwa has managed to keep the government on its toes through his diligent scrutiny.
In recent times, Ablakwa has been involved in exposing various issues, including what he calls the “Akufo-Addo luxurious private jet scandals.” He has shared details of President Nana Akufo-Addo’s private jet travels, including the costs and durations of these trips. Ablakwa highlighted alleged extravagant spending on these trips, questioning their value and impact on the national budget.
One of the significant scandals Ablakwa exposed is what he termed the “Kitchen Scandal.” He alleged that a private company, West Blue, was seeking to enforce payment of a GH¢187.3 million judgment debt from the government, even though the government had conducted a value-for-money audit and concluded that West Blue actually owed the government. Ablakwa accused individuals close to the government, including Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, of being involved in seeking the payment. His exposé led to a halt in the payment process.
Ablakwa’s actions have drawn attention to issues of accountability, transparency, and governance in Ghana. Despite not being directly responsible for investigations, he has used social media and other platforms to shed light on alleged irregularities, prompting discussions and actions within the government.
By closely scrutinizing government actions and exposing potential financial mismanagement, Ablakwa has become a prominent figure in the fight against corruption and wasteful spending. His efforts have sparked public debate and have led to actions that impact how public funds are used and allocated in Ghana.
