Report: Parliament and military leaders in crucial talks on sending Ghanaian troops to Niger

The Parliament of Ghana has reportedly summoned military chiefs and heads of security agencies in the country to discuss President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s decision to send Ghanaian troops to Niger as part of the ECOWAS standby force to remove the new military leadership in Niger.

According to reports, the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament summoned the heads of the Ghana Armed Forces and other security agencies to brief them on the president’s decision. The meeting included the leadership of the Ghana Armed Forces, National Security, Minister for Defence, Minister for Interior, and the leadership of the Ghana Police Service, among others.

The discussions reportedly touched on the constitutionality of Akufo-Addo’s decision and relevant articles of the 1992 Ghanaian Constitution. Article 40 of the constitution emphasizes promoting and protecting Ghana’s interests in its dealings with other nations and adhering to the principles of international organizations like ECOWAS.

The decision to deploy a standby force to Niger was made by ECOWAS leaders in response to the detention of President Mohamed Bazoum by the Presidential Guard of Niger. The situation has raised concerns, as the military juntas in Burkina Faso and Mali warned that any attempt to forcibly restore President Bazoum could lead to a declaration of war on them.

Security experts have cautioned that sending troops to Niger could have significant consequences, and the Ghanaian Parliament’s discussions highlight the importance of considering legal and constitutional implications before participating in regional interventions.
