A joint team of the Ghana Police Service and the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) in Assin Fosu has intercepted an articulated truck loaded with 250 bags of government-subsidized fertilizer intended for farmers.
The fertilizer, consisting of different types meant for cocoa cultivation, was reportedly being smuggled to Ivory Coast. Three suspects, including the driver of the truck, a houseboy, and an ambulance driver, were arrested in connection with the incident.
The Central Regional Chief Farmer, Nana Kwasi Fori, indicated that the NIB officials had been monitoring the suspects’ movements for some time. Acting on intelligence, the authorities intervened and discovered the smuggled fertilizer. The ambulance driver was identified as having contracted the other suspects for the illegal operation.
Nana Ofori warned against such illegal activities and urged individuals involved to refrain from such actions. He also encouraged the public to report any suspected cases of smuggling or illegal activities to the authorities. The smuggling of government-subsidized goods undermines agricultural policies and can have negative consequences on the country’s food security and economy.
