Breakdown of Ghana passport fees: What you need to pay

The recent unannounced visit by Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, to the Passport Office in Accra has brought attention to the issue of overpricing and corruption in the passport acquisition process.

The minister expressed her dismay at the extortion of unsuspecting applicants and took action by sacking staff members involved in corrupt practices.

The minister highlighted the issue of “goro” individuals who facilitate the acquisition of passports by collaborating with insiders within the passport office. These unauthorized individuals charge exorbitant fees, far beyond the official passport application fees, causing applicants to pay much more than they should.

To provide accurate information, GhanaWeb conducted checks on the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration to determine the official passport application fees. According to the website, the fees for different passport application types are as follows:

  1. Expedited Application (32 pages): GH¢150
  2. Expedited Application (48 pages): GH¢200
  3. Standard Application (32 pages): GH¢100
  4. Standard Application (48 pages): GH¢150

The website also provides details about required documents for passport application, such as birth certificates, proof of identity, and profession.

The visit by the minister and her emphasis on curbing corruption in the passport acquisition process highlight the government’s commitment to ensuring transparency and fairness for citizens seeking to obtain passports.
