PhD Senior Research Fellow IFEST, Barnabas Addai Amanfo has said that the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results look good, but there is a need to focus on the performance of the individual schools and the students.
According to him, the core subjects, English, science, Mathematics, and Social Studies, have been the best core subject results since the free senior high school program started in 2017.
“Examining the performances of these 10yrs period from 2013, cumulatively, this is an excellent pass over the previous years”.
Speaking on AM GHANA SHOW, he said assessing the performances of the individual schools and students will determine whether they performed or not.
“It’s a ritual to give a summary of performances on the four core subjects: Mathematics, Integrated Science, Social Studies, and English language”.
Elaborating on the free SHS policy, he said “You can’t use their Examination to quantify the quality of our Education System”.
“Speaking about free senior high Education has various teams and one of them is quality, access etc, there are more when it comes to free education so WASSCE results only cannot be used to justify that the Education system is of higher quality while there are factors to be considered”.
questions for students in the regime of 53 million cedis and the government has also introduced intervention in the SHS where teachers are supposed to have special arrangements for students who are not doing well.
“We cannot say because this year has been good, definitely years ahead would also be good”.
