Prove them Wrong

By Stephen Bittor

Action they say speaks louder than words, is what our politicians must start inculcating in their political communication strategies. It makes the work easier and more convincing, that is speaking to facts that resonate on the ground. This is the only way political leaders can regain the lost trust that citizens once had for them.

On the 7th of February, 2024, the vice president of the Republic of Ghana, Dr Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, who doubles as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party ( NPP) for 2024 general elections, took to the stage to outline his plans and visions for Ghanaians at the Kofi Ohene Konadu auditorium of the University of Professional Studies, Accra ( UPSA). Among his visions were his plan to cancel the Electronic Transaction Levy, popularly known as E-Levy, the 10% tax on betting and lottery winnings, among others, should he win the forthcoming general elections.

On this basis, it is logical to say that the vice president shares in the plight of Ghanaians than his boss, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo, who has proven to be the most tyrant leader under the Fourth Republic. It is still clear in the minds of all well-meaning Ghanaians the circumstances under which the controversial E-levy bill was passed by parliament. And so to have a cold response from the vice president on the passage of these bills is questionable.

Given this, Dr. Bawumia must find answers to the following questions which includes:
*Why wait till close to two years to comment on the E-levy?
*Why wait till six months to comment on the 10% tax on betting and on lottery winnings?
*Should your posture towards these taxes be interpreted as someone who has been sidelined in this current administration as speculated by the some Ghanaians?
*Why should Ghanaians consider you as the saviour against your boss, the destroyer ?..etc. These and many other questions to the vice president when answered concretely and convincingly would revive the trust and love that most Ghanaians had for him.
Taking these into account, it’s prudent and wise to suggest to the vice president, to put into action now some of these policies and plans that he has for Ghanaians especially, the cancellation of E-levy and the betting tax which are still in full force. It’s the only way to start working on his credibility deficit, and so I think it’s time to prove his doubters wrong by adhering to the above suggestions.
