Fix Our Roads – Nima Residents Demand

BY: PASCALINE SACKER

Residents of Nima, a suburb of Accra have called on the government to fix the roads in the area which are in deplorable states.

The residents who are unhappy about the state of the roads said some businesses have been closed due to the poor nature of the roads. Aside from the collapse of businesses, the poor nature of the roads makes the area very dusty, giving the residents health problems, including chest infections.

Residents who spoke to Adoanews said, if the roads within the Nima enclave were fixed, the time taken to drive from one point to the other will be significantly reduced and it will help businesses grow.

A driver, Mr Athelstane said, the bad nature of the road was often causing damages to his vehicle. As a result, he’s been forced to park his vehicle at home due to his inability to repair the damaged parts of the vehicle. “Drivers in an attempt to avoid bumping into the potholes end colliding into each other which will cause avoidable accidents, have decided to park their cars at home and walk” he explained.

A bookshop seller who gave her name as Martha, revealed that a taxi driver in an attempt to avoid potholes almost drove his vehicle into her shop. She explained that due to the fear
of losing her life, she’s unable to return to work after the incident.

They appealed to the authorities especially Assembly members and the government to fix roads in the community, as the bad state of the roads are negatively affecting the residents. In order to prevent unwanted accidents and damages to vehicles, serious attention must be given to the roads in Nima.
