Nima, a suburb in the Greater Accra Region is currently grappling with a severe shortage of water, leaving residents struggling to meet their basic daily needs like water. The situation has sparked concerns among community folks as the scarcity of water has persisted for several weeks.

According to local authorities, the shortage is primarily due to a decrease in the water supply from Ghana Water Company Limited, the main source of water that serves the residents in the community. The inadequate supply has been attributed to a combination of factors, including increased demand, infrastructure issues, and irregular rainfall patterns.

Speaking to a resident in the community, Nii Tagoe, mentioned that they often go through stress getting water whenever we are in this kind of situation.

A businesswoman in community who sells noodles locally known as “indomie” and also a resident in the community, Hajia Rabbi stated that almost a week now since water stopped flowing in their taps and all her reserved gallons containing water are finished.

Residents have been forced to alternative measures to cope with the situation. Many have been relying on water vendors who charge exorbitant prices for a limited supply. Others have been traveling long distances to access water from neighbouring communities like Newtown and Maamobi.

The water shortage has a significant negative impact on livelihood in Nima. Basic activities such as cooking, cleaning and personal hygiene have become challenging for residents. Additionally, businesses that rely on water, such as food joints have been severely affected, leading to financial losses.

Efforts are underway to repair and upgrade the water infrastructure to improve the supply.
