NDC Raises Concerns Over Potential Continuation of Akufo-Addo’s Policies Under Bawumia Presidency

By: Ruth Tang

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) expressed apprehensions regarding the prospect of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer for the 2024 election, assuming power and continuing President Akufo-Addo’s policies.

This was made known during the party’s press conference yesterday.

NDC’s General Secretary, Fiifi Kwetey, highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s significant involvement in the decision-making process of the Akufo-Addo government, raising doubts about his promises to abolish inconvenient taxes while being integral in their implementation.

Kwetey questioned the credibility of Dr. Bawumia, emphasizing his pivotal role in crafting and implementing policies that have burdened Ghanaian citizens with taxes. He urged Dr. Bawumia to apologize for the taxes imposed by the NPP government and emphasized the urgency of abolishing them immediately rather than waiting until 2025.
“The Ghanaian people cannot live through another day of these suffocating taxes, let alone ten good months. The time to scrap the crippling and draconian taxes that the NPP has imposed on suffering Ghanaians is now” he said.

The NDC’s stance reflects concerns about the continuity of policies under a potential Bawumia presidency and highlights the party’s skepticism regarding Dr. Bawumia’s trustworthiness as a leader. As the 2024 election approaches, these concerns may shape public discourse and influence voter decisions.
“How is it possible to trust a Vice President who has shown no penitence or remorse about deliberately lying and conning the people of Ghana? A man who believes that leaders can continue to fool all the people all the time.” Kwetey emphasized.
