Anti-LGBTQ+ bill’s third reading blocked

By Wilhelmina Oddoye

Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has blocked the progressing of the third reading of the Anti-LGBTQ bill. With exception to his argument, the legislature would have been passed into a law yesterday in parliament.

According to him, he is in opposition of the provision that would lead to the imprisonment of person engaging in LGBTQ activities.

He stated that the issue at hand is “behavioural and in dealing with behavioural matters, the court system has to introduce a more humane, reformatory, rehabilitative system where people who breach our laws, who sin against our legislation will have an opportunity to reform”

Mr. Afenyo added that a more feasible solution should be adapted but “to jail, a person for his or her sexuality will not be the solution in maintaining our Ghanaian family values and ensuring proper human sexual rights “

As he pleaded on the Speaker to consider the amendments he has proposed concerning the bill, Sam George said his argument was weak.
