The Chairperson of the Management Committee of Ghana’s national women’s football team (Black Queens), Gifty Oware-Mensah, has said that before the match their game with Zambia this month, the players’ due bonuses will be paid.
The team is gearing up to take on Zambia in the third round of qualifiers for the 2024 Olympic Games. The upcoming clash, set to unfold in a two-legged match, kicks off on February 23. The Black Queens, eyeing their inaugural Olympic appearance following their recent qualification for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, are facing a challenge as players are yet to receive their promised bonuses from the qualifying matches, as each player is owed between $7,500 and $10,000.
Oware-Mensah, also a member of the Ghana Football Association’s Executive Council, revealed that discussions have been underway among relevant stakeholders to address the outstanding payments. She expressed optimism, pointing to assurances from key figures including Kurt Okraku, the President of the GFA, Mustapha Ussif, the Minister of Youth and Sports, and officials from the Ministry itself, assuring that the funds will be disbursed before the team’s next match.
“Myself, the President of GFA, Kurt Okraku, the Minister [Mustapha Ussif] and the Ministry of Youth and Sports have spoken and they have made promises to us that we are going to get these monies for these girls before we go into our next match,” she said.
Under the guidance of head coach Nora Hauptle, who took the helm in 2023, the Black Queens have enjoyed a string of successes, winning all but one of their games leading up to this crucial Olympic qualifier against Zambia.
