By: Ruth Tang

Tragedy struck the Nkawkaw community as a fatal motor accident claimed the lives of four individuals, including three male pupils and a female teacher identified as Dorcas Dede from Ampeah Memorial School. The incident occurred on the Nkawkaw section of the Kumasi-Accra road late Thursday afternoon around 3:30 pm when about 23 students including the driver, Agya Ofosu Addo, were returning home from school.

Reports indicate that a Nissan Patrol vehicle, allegedly the official vehicle of the District Chief Executive for Atwima Kwanwoma in the Ashanti region, Prince Karikari, collided with the Hyundai mini-bus carrying the victims. Eyewitnesses mentioned that the Nissan Patrol attempted an unauthorized U-turn while driving on the road shoulders from the Accra-Kumasi direction near Nanchia.

Also, the mini-bus driver reportedly used an unauthorized route to join the Nkawkaw bypass at Nanchia before making the unauthorized turn onto the Kumasi-Accra lanes.

Sixteen injured victims, including the bus driver, 11 pupils, and a female teacher, were rushed to Holy Family Hospital in Nkawkaw for treatment. Unfortunately, despite efforts, four individuals, including three boys and the female teacher, succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.

Additionally, the District Chief Executive for Atwima Kwanwoma and three other passengers on board the Nissan Patrol were admitted to the same hospital in stable condition.

Further checks at Agyarkwa Hospital revealed that three out of six pupils initially admitted there had been referred to Koforidua General Hospital for additional care. As of Thursday night, three pupils and another female teacher remained hospitalized.

Hospital management, with police support, faced challenges in managing the influx of concerned individuals, highlighting the severity of the situation. This heartbreaking incident underscores the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures and stricter enforcement to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
