The Deputy Chairman of the Electoral Commission of Ghana, Dr Bossman Asare has clarified the air on the controversial proposition for the change of date for 2024 general elections. According to him, the idea is feasible but not in this year’s elections, but rather in subsequent ones.
Mr. Asare pointed to the fact that the bill has to go to parliament for approval before its possible implementation, which he believes will happen soon. “So within the last few months, this is something the commission is going to trigger,” he said on Joy News.
Early this year, the commission proposed the change of date alongside considering making election days national holidays, during an Inter- Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting held on Monday, January 22, 2024. The proposal after it was unveiled, faced a stiff rejection from a section of Ghanaians and the National Democratic Congress ( NDC), describing it as immature and should be implemented in November 2028.
