In a collaboration focused on raising awareness about environmental issues and improving educational resources, the Eastern Regional Education Directorate has partnered with Zoomlion Ghana Ltd to launch a trial program on Waste Segregation in nine selected Basic Schools in the New Juabeng South Municipality.
The main aim of this innovative project is to encourage the separation of plastic waste from other types of waste generated in school grounds. This initiative aims at promoting recycling efforts and addressing the growing problem of plastic pollution in our environment.
The Eastern Regional Schools Health, Godfried Caesar, and Education Programme (SHEP) Coordinator, explained the rationale behind the project, stressing the importance of maintaining clean school environments through waste segregation. Notably, plastic waste like water sachets and bottles will be collected and sold to recycling companies, with the proceeds directed towards meeting essential needs within the schools, thus enhancing the teaching and learning environment.
Additionally, Caesar emphasized the broader significance of the project in tackling environmental degradation caused by haphazard disposal of plastic waste, which poses threats to ecosystems and human health by contaminating soils and waterways.
Caesar also expressed confidence in the project’s future and called for support from organizations to extend the program to all 52 schools in the Municipality and beyond, following a successful trial period.
The Eastern Regional Coordinator of Zoomlion Ghana, Faustina Shardey, echoed Caesar’s sentiments, noting that the initiative aligns with the ongoing “Zero Waste” campaign in Accra. As a demonstration of their commitment, Zoomlion Ghana has provided each of the nine participating schools with two dustbins, liners, and other essential materials to facilitate the smooth implementation of the waste segregation initiative.
Through this collaborative endeavor, significant strides are being made towards promoting environmental sustainability and combating plastic pollution, while simultaneously enhancing educational facilities and opportunities for students and educators alike.
