The Deputy majority leader, Alexander Afenyo Markin has withdrawn his proposed amendments for the LGBTQ+ bill after the speaker of parliament, Hon. Alban Sumana Bagbin asked him to.
His proposal, in Clause 6, was to provide “mandatory counselling on human sexual rights and family values as a post-conviction sentence” instead of three to five years imprisonment.
In opposition, the sponsor of the bill, Hon. Sam George stated that a consideration of Mr. Afenyo’s proposal will incur costs for the state.
He added that inculcating rehabilitation and reformation methods for those who go against the law will require therapeutic means which will demand a lot of money.
Sam George suggested that such an initiative could be taken but shouldn’t be included in the bill.
However, Mr. Afenyo Markin emphasized his withdrawal of the proposal was based on his respect for the chair though he disagrees.
