The Vice President of Ghana and leader of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has unveiled his manifesto implementation committee members, who are set to review the 2016 and 2020 policy documents to draw a comprehensive one for 2024.
The committee is chaired by Osei Mensah Bonsu and deputized by Kojo Oppong Nkrumah with Evron Hughes as the General Secretary. The manifesto implementation committee is further divided into subcommittees assigned to particular sectors such as agriculture, education, and health. Also, the current Ministers of the various sectors are in charge of advising the sub-committees concerning policy developments.
Speaking on PM Show on Adoa TV, a Political Science Lecturer, Boakye Yiadom mentioned that policy documents are drafted by party individuals and groups who are experts in various fields including agriculture, trade and industry, health, and education.
He explained that the rationale is to ensure a constructive manifesto, in the sense that individuals with special expertise in the various sectors have the experience and knowledge and will be able to identify what will be worth a policy.
Following the appointment of the former Black Star Captain, Asamoah Gyan, Yiadom stated that he might have been a member of NPP without the notice of others. Asamoah Gyan might have not had experience from other fronts of sports, however having been in the football team may set him well for the job as a policy team member for sports according to the choice of the party. Similarly, he stated that Kwabena Agyapong’s appointment as the chair of the Housing and Infrastructure Committee was a good idea since he is a civil engineer and has knowledge and experience in the field of engineering.
Moreover, he said that it would have been good if any of the parties had selected their respective running mates and had them among the manifesto committees. “If they were chairmen of the manifesto implementation committees for both parties, I think it would have been the best but they have not named their running mates for reasons best known to themselves ”.
Yiadom further alluded to the fact that being a member of the manifesto implementation committee does not necessarily mean becoming a minister.
He said this pointing at Dr. Mark Assibey-Yeboah’s fair experience in the economy and being a part of the committee for the economic sector and that of Dr. Augustine Blay for the digitization and communication committee. “Whatever the case is, they are only going to put up, they are not going to be the ministers as far as we know. Some may be while others may not” Yiadom stated.
