Re Press statement by Minister of Sports on Ghana Cycling Federation on supply of bicycles and accessories for Africa Games 2023.

Attn: All Media Outlets

The Ghana Cycling Federation’s attention has been drawn to a footage of the Minister of Youth and Sports , Hon. Mustapha Ussif addressing the media on the above subject.

The federation wishes to state its position on the assertion made by the Hon. Minister to put the record straight.

The CDMs office for the Africa Games has far back as July and November 2023 engaged all federations participating in the Africa Games to provide lists of all equipments and accessories with specification required for the games.
The GCF in compliance as shown in the email correspondence attached to the CDM and the LOC submitted its list for bicycles and accessories and needed for the Africa Games .

Unfortunately the Federation did not receive the full compliment on its list during training prior to the commencement of the games on the 9th March, 2024 and thereafter. There were no bicycles, jerseys , helmets, gloves, tires, inner tubes and shoes for Team Ghana for the competition as expected and we had to rely on the federation’s old supplies which was supplemented by bicycles and accessories belonging to the individual cyclists selected for the games. Reference to the aluminum bike by the minister should be viewed in that context as the cyclist was referring to her bike which she used for the competition. The federation was shown some cycling boots on the eve of the start of the competition which were inappropriate for the competition and couldn’t be used for the games.

The federation from time to time engaged the CDM on its request for the games by following up with email WhatsApp chats and calls over the period as shown in the attachment below.

The federation is compelled under the circumstances to come out with this statement to clear the air on this matter as the Minister’s statement sought to apportion blame on the federation for not making a request for equipment for the games which is not the case.

We have engaged the Ministry, LOC and the CDM through out and it is the collaboration with them that eventually delivered a decent venue for the games with start and finish lines, crash barriers etc for which we are grateful.

We urge all to put the unfortunate incident behind us and focus on the games.
The Federation will continue to work hand in hand with the Ministry and LOC for a positive outcome of the games moving forward.

Thank you.
