“The port is the heart of the nation” — Port workers

By: Laurinda Nyarko

The port workers in Ghana have called on substantial increment of port charges to meet the international standards.

The chairman union for the Meridian Ports Services, Mr Rockson Abumba called for an adjustment of their salaries to reflect the international rates and levies charged for services at the port.

“The port is the heart of the nation, revenues are generated from the port and pumped into every sector” some porter workers cited.

The National Democratic Congress flag bearer, John Dramani Mahama during his greater Accra regional tour held discussions with industry players in the maritime and ports sectors in Tema,

The industry players in the Ports appealed to him to deliberately put in place a special package for the port workers.

He referenced bankers who are entitled to loans at minimal interest and indicated the need for port workers to get similar incentives.

“Our salaries do not match international standards, but the charges at the port are international” he emphasized.
According to him, workers have to depend on overtime allowance since their salary is not good enough.
