The African Hockey Federation held a press conference to address South Africa’s withdrawal from men’s and women’s hockey at the African Games in Ghana.
The President Mr. Seif Ahmed admitted that the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Pitch is not certified, but he believes it is very safe for players, which is why other countries are using it. He further explained that the South African team nor the manager did not see the Federation and the tournament director about their decision to withdraw from the competition. There was no formal discussion between them but rather they took their decision from their heads.
“We received an email from SAHA (South African Hockey Association) that the two teams want to withdraw. They came two days before, took some pictures of the pitch, and said it was impossible to finish on the 17th”.
Mr Seif Ahmed expressed his concern to the Local Organising Committee chairman and Ghana Hockey to certify the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Pitch turf for the AFCON U21.
