A call for Ghana to Host 2026 African Athletics championship

By Janet Dumas

Before the 13th African Games, Bawa Fuseini, President of Ghana Athletics, expressed confidence in the growth of Legon Sports Stadium for athletes and Ghana’s bid for hosting international games.

The Legon Stadium, which can hold 11,000 people, played a crucial role in the recent games. It hosted the opening and closing ceremonies and several sporting events, including athletics, football, rugby, and others. This achievement has triggered the Confederation of African Athletics’ interest, and they have invited Ghana to host the 2026 African Championship in Athletics. This invitation reflects the stadium’s ability to attract high-profile events and support the country’s sporting reputation in Africa.

Ghana has never had the opportunity to host the African Athletics Championship since its establishment in 1979. Nigeria has been the host country twice, in 1989 and 2018.

“We have already started getting requests from the Confederation of African Athletics to bid for the 2026 African Athletics Championships. When they came, what they saw, I was told that for the last 20 years, they’ve never seen any organization like this before. We did three official courses. And the last one, we had 110, all of them passed. We have a lot of officials. We have a lot of equipment, we have three sets of equipment”. He stressed.

Cameroon will take the reins as the host nation this year with the event set to be held at the Olembe Stadium organized by the Confederation of African Athletics. The African Championships in Athletics is a reputable continental athletics event.
