The Feast Ghana Initiative: A Step Forward To Promote The Ghanaian Culinary And Cultural Heritage

By: Ruth Tang

Recently, Ghana has witnessed a shift in culinary preferences, notably among the younger generation, often referred to as ‘Gen Z’. Traditional Ghanaian dishes like mashed plantain (ɛtɔ), tuo Zaafi, and Akple among others, are facing dwindling interest as the fascination with foreign foods such as pizza, shawarma, burgers, Chinese cuisine and pasta takes centre stage.

This trend highlights a concerning disconnect between the youth and their rich culinary heritage. However, amidst this cultural shift, there arises a pressing need to reignite appreciation for Ghana’s diverse and flavorful cuisine. Embracing and celebrating the country’s culinary traditions can foster a sense of pride and identity, encouraging individuals to explore and savour the unique flavours that Ghana has to offer as well as boosting the economy in one way or another.

In line with this, the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) is preparing to introduce an initiative designed to promote indigenous cuisine nationwide and highlight the diverse culinary traditions of the country.
The launch of the initiative, named ‘Feast Ghana’ is scheduled for Wednesday, April 17, at the Accra Tourist Information Centre (ATIC) and is a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, the Asanteman Queenmothers Association, and the Public Service Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress (PSWU of TUC).

This event, under the theme “Flavours of Ghana, Celebrating Ghana’s Diversity Through Food”, is set to commemorate, showcase and promote Ghana’s rich and unique culinary heritage in different ways. This is a step forward to reignite people’s love and interest for Ghana’s locally made foods, especially among the ‘Gen Zs’.
As rightly stated by the CEO of GTA, Akwasi Agyeman, the Feast Ghana program aligns with the “See Ghana, Eat Ghana, Wear Ghana and Feel Ghana” initiative by the GTA some time ago as a way of promoting Ghana’s vibrant cultural heritage.

By recognizing the value of one’s food, Ghanaians can preserve their culinary legacy while embracing the cultural diversity that enriches their culinary landscape.
