The minister-designate for the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dakoa Newman, has said that school records of Naa Okromo, the child at the centre of the purported child marriage in Nungua have revealed her age to be fifteen (15) years.
The minister made this revelation during a briefing in Accra on Thursday, April 18. She stated, amongst other things, that, “Naa Okromo’s date of birth on records from the creche she attended indicates that she is 15 years old, and she was born on 18th July 2008.”
According to the traditional leader’s office, the child was sixteen, not twelve. The child’s new age contradicts what Gborbu Wulomo’s management announced during an April 3 press conference.
Also, the minister-designate indicated that medical tests conducted on the child showed she was “intact” and that she was not pregnant.
She also added that the mother of Naa Okromo has been made to sign an agreement to ensure that they adhere to all children’s rights laws.
