A tragic accident occurred on Sunday, May 19th, 2024, along the Bunso-Akyem Asafo stretch of the Accra-Kumasi Highway involving vehicles from the President’s convoy, which was returning from Kumasi after escorting the President for a series of events over the weekend.

Mr. Kwesi Atta, one of the drivers, lost his life in the incident, whereas several close protection and police officers from the President’s security detail suffered injuries of different severities. The President himself was unharmed as he had travelled back to Accra via military aircraft.

The injured officers received initial treatment at the Suhum Government Hospital and are now being transferred to the University of Ghana Medical Centre for further treatment.
The accident left multiple vehicles in the convoy completely destroyed.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased, and we wish a speedy recovery to the injured officers. Further details will be communicated as we continue to assess the situation” the May 19 statement signed by the Communications Director of the President’s Office, Eugene Arhin, revealed.
