NEIP to train 5,000 Kayayei by December 2024

The National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme has initiated training sessions for Kayayeis through the Kayayei Empowerment Programme, under the guidance of the Office of the Vice President, in Madina and Ashaiman.

Starting on Tuesday, May 28, the training aims to benefit 5,000 individuals, with 600 participants per monthly cohort, continuing until December 2024. The curriculum covers various skills such as beading, jewellery making, soap and detergent production, makeup artistry, bakery, decor, pedicure, and manicure. This initiative follows the recent opening of the Kayayei Empowerment Training Centre in Madina, Accra, inaugurated by Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on May 21.

Equipped with essential facilities including training rooms, pantries, a kitchen, a clinic, washrooms, dormitories, and security measures like CCTV and fire extinguishers, the Centre aims to provide holistic support to the trainees. Additional training and accommodation facilities are spread across Accra and Kumasi as part of the Kayayei Empowerment Project. The primary objective of the programme is to offer Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to head porters.

Addressing concerns and criticisms surrounding the project, Dr Bawumia expressed confidence in its success and emphasized its positive impact on the lives of the Kayayeis. He acknowledged initial doubts about the feasibility of the project but assured its commitment to uplifting the lives of the marginalized. “When I made this promise on behalf of the government, there were many who thought it was not a realistic promise.”

“We had COVID in 2020, and we had to recover from it and so what we are doing for Kayayeis today is part of a whole programme of activity of our government to help the poor and the vulnerable,” he added.
