Prof. Frimpong Oppong and Sophia Bernasko Essah nominated as Supreme Court judges

The Judicial Council has approved the learned Fellow of the Ghana Academy of Sciences, Professor of Law and legal academic Prof. Richard Frimpong Oppong and his co-nominee, the learned Justice of the Court of Appeal, Her Ladyship Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko Essah for the Supreme Court Bench.

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, announced the approval during the inauguration of the Governing Board of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Centre on Monday, 16th July 2024.

According to the President, the duo is billed for an appearance before Parliament for the constitutionally provided requirement of vetting by the House.

Prof. Frimpong Oppong, when appointed will join Prof. Henrietta Mensah-Bonsu as one of the legal academics on Ghana’s apex court.

He will bring a wealth of experience in both the practice of law in Ghana and international arbitration.

His academic career includes teaching stints in Ghana, Europe, and the United States, and he follows in the footsteps of illustrious predecessors like Justice Professor Date-Bah and Prof. Mensah-Bonsu, who have made significant contributions to the legal field.

Justice Bernasko Essah, with her extensive background as a State Attorney, private legal practitioner, and as a Justice of the High Court and Court of Appeal, will also bring considerable experience to the Supreme Court when appointed.

She is a member of the International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ), underscoring her commitment to the global legal community and women’s issues in the judiciary.
