Apologise to the Minister because you have lied – GBC DG

Executive Assistant to the Minister of Youth and Sports, Jamaludeen A. Abdullah, has called on the Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Professor Amin Alhassan, to apologise to Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif.

According to him, Professor Alhassan’s statements regarding the funding for the 13th African Games were misleading.

“Apologize to the Minister because you have lied,” Abdullah said in an interview.

He accused Professor Alhassan of playing games and intentionally confusing Ghanaians about the financial dealings between the Ministry and GBC.

The controversy arises from conflicting reports about the funding for the Games, which were held in Accra from March 8 to March 23.

The Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif, disclosed to the Public Accounts Committee that the Ministry had paid over $3 million to GBC for the production and broadcast of the event.

In response, GBC’s Director General, Prof. Amin Alhassan, claimed that GBC’s share was only $105,000, with the remaining funds forwarded to third parties.

However, Abdullah indicated that they are awaiting a formal counterstatement from Professor Alhassan and a public apology.

“We have issued a statement and are waiting for his response so we can release our documentation and clarify the issue,” he said.

He also stated that, the Sport Minister could not pocket money that was not allocated for the Ministry.

The discrepancies between the Ministry of Sports and GBC have sparked widespread public debate, with many calling for greater transparency and accountability.
