Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Education Committee, Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, has described as shameful, the government’s indebtedness to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
He says the development is disrupting the academic calendars of both Senior and Junior High school education in the country.
According to him, these debts are affecting the marking and collation of examination results for the students putting the timelines set by WAEC for the release of these results in danger.
In an exclusive with TV3’s parliamentary correspondent, Courage Komla Klutse, the lawmaker feared what would become of the WASSCE which has just started especially considering the state of the BECE which is in limbo due to the government’s indebtedness to WAEC.
“It is a shame and we must all be embarrassed that our government owes WAEC to the extent that WAEC is incapable of fulfilling its obligations as far as its core duties are concerned.
“The further destruction of the academic calendar will not go well for the education of our young ones. BECE is in arrears in terms of the amount government is supposed to pay. WASSCE has started, your guess is as good as mine, the implications of the delay in the marking and release of results for the BECE and what is going to happen when the WASSCE exams are over.
“It is the same WAEC you still owe that is going to have to deal with the outcome of what government is failing to do. We believe it is our responsibility to draw government’s attention to these things with the hope that government will do the needful,” he indicated.
