O’Reilly stabbing incident due to growing indiscipline in our schools – NAGRAT

The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has linked the increasing unruly behaviour in schools to the limitations imposed on teachers regarding student discipline.

This statement follows the recent arrest of an O’Reilly Senior High School student who fatally stabbed a classmate on Tuesday, September 3, after an argument reportedly escalated over whose father was wealthier.

Speaking to Accra-based Citi News, NAGRAT President, Angel Carbonu stressed the need for school authorities to have the autonomy to enforce discipline to prevent such tragic events.

“Unfortunately, when teachers attempt to enforce rules, certain groups advocating for human rights often accuse them of overstepping boundaries,”Carbonu noted.

The NAGRAT President criticized the influence of some financial NGOs.

“When we accept financial support from these organizations, we sometimes lose sight of the need to establish rules and regulations that reflect the realities of our environment” he stated.

Mr Carbonu lamented that, the current approach discourages discipline.

“We’re told, ‘don’t do this, don’t do that; speaking to a student in a certain way might cause psychological harm.’ It’s as if we’re expected to coddle students, even when they misbehave. As a result, the school environment is increasingly becoming a place where students are emboldened to act out” he added.
