The NDC has a better way of fighting “Galamsey” – Raymond Ebbah

By: ANFRED

Emphasizing the fight against illegal mining (Galamsey) and the NDC’s intentions outlined in its 2024 manifesto, Raymond Nana Ebbah, NDC’s Sectorial spokesperson on mining mentioned that, from 2013 to 2015, the NDC allowed small-scale miners to operate responsibly without hindrance.

According to him it was a move the NPP did not consider when they assume office in 2017. The canker has become an albatross on the neck of the government with many Ghanaians concerned about its debilitating impact.

In an interview with Nana Kwame Sokratis on the “AM in Ghana” show, Raymond highlighted the NDC’s manifesto commitments regarding the fight against Galamsey.

He mentioned the NDC’s plan to implement the Small-Scale Mining Board, which aims to regulate the activities of miners and prevent mining on river bodies.

He further explained that the NDC plans to establish mineral commission offices in mining districts, as outlined in the 2024 manifesto, to prevent mining in river bodies, however the NDC does not intend to involve security agencies in combating Galamsey, as the government aims to maintain the peace and sovereignty of the country.

In Utilising the Artificial Intelligence in the fight against “Galamsey”, Raymond reiterated that Artificial Intelligence would replace the deployment of security personnel to prevent negative impacts and casualties.

This will include using AI to locate all small-scale mining and galamsey operations, track and excavators.

This initiative, he says, aims to strengthen coordinated efforts in monitoring and regulating mining activities, thereby promoting sustainable mining practices and environmental conservation.

He assured that if the NDC assumes office in January 2025, all water bodies will be restored to it’s normalcy.
