The Anglican Bishop of Accra His Lordship Rt Rev’d Dr Daniel Sylvanus Mensah Torto has joined calls for the immediate ban on illegal mining commonly known as galamsey.
This demand comes in response to the worsening effects of illegal mining activities, which continue to devastate the environment and livelihoods across the country.
This urgent plea comes after the widespread environmental degradation and destruction of livelihoods.
In a press statement released, the Anglican Bishop of Accra expressed deep concern and urgency regarding the issue of illegal mining, commonly known as ‘galamsey,’ in the country.
The Bishop highlighted that, as stewards of God’s creation, it is our collective responsibility to protect the environment for future generations. Drawing from the Bible’s teaching to “till and keep” the earth (Genesis 2:15), he stressed that the earth should not be exploited and destroyed. The destructive impacts of galamsey on the environment, water sources, communities, and health were emphasized.
The Bishop warned that if citizens ignore these consequences, they deceive themselves. He called for action to stop deforestation, soil erosion, and water pollution caused by illegal mining, and noted the importance of protecting the lives of thousands of miners, many of whom are children at risk of injury and death.
He further condemned the continuation of illegal mining, particularly when it is supported by leaders who undermine the rule of law and promote corruption. This behavior, he said, erodes trust in institutions and hinders sustainable development.
The Anglican Church stands firmly against these destructive practices and urges leaders to take decisive action. The statement called for the enforcement of existing laws, support for alternative livelihoods in affected communities, and the promotion of sustainable mining practices.
In closing, the Bishop emphasized the need for the nation to work together to build a better future for Ghana by choosing sustainability and integrity over destruction and exploitation. The statement concluded with a prayer for God’s guidance on the path of righteousness.
