Story by Nathaniel Nii Kotei Ashie

The vibrant cultural heritage of the GaDangme people was on full display as the Gadangme Association of New Jersey celebrated its annual Homowo Festival at Conant Park in Hillside. The festival, a highlight of the community’s calendar, brought together chiefs, queen mothers, and members to honor the rich traditions of the GaDangme culture.

The event began with an opening prayer led by Madam Angelina, setting a reflective tone for the occasion. One of the most important aspects of the Homowo festival, which means “hooted at hunger,” is the remembrance of the ancestors and gratitude for a bountiful harvest. As part of this tradition, Nii Akushe led the libation, a sacred ritual that honors the ancestors and invites blessings upon the community. Nii Akushe then proceeded to share the history of Gadangme and the significance of the Homowo celebration since time in memorial. Several other rites, deeply rooted in Gadangme tradition, were also performed, reaffirming the community’s connection to their cultural roots. Sprinkling of Kpokpoi was led by the chief joined by the members to the admiration of invited guests. The raffle draw also saw the day of light with winners taking home air fryers, juice making machines, laptops and African prints. A call for participation and group photograph was done by the MC for the day in person of Mr. Ed Mettle

After the formal rituals concluded, the festival shifted to a celebratory mode, featuring traditional dances, music, and an abundance of food. The Omanye Music Dance Ensemble provided energetic and rhythmic performances, inviting everyone to join in the festivities. As attendees indulged in traditional dishes and danced to the music also provided by DJ Keith, the festival embodied the essence of Homowo a time for unity, thanksgiving, and joy.

The food bazaar joint had Zianabu Ghanaian and Afican Dishes, Benico Catering Services and Jonas Amponsah service guest with sumptuous Ghana dishes. ‘Sweet P Decorations’, who brings everything live and makes it more interesting graced the occasion with a touch of traditional artifacts and decorations.

With the continued success of the Homowo festival, the Gadangme Association of New Jersey remains dedicated to preserving and promoting their heritage within the diaspora. Each year, the event draws greater participation, allowing the next generation to stay connected to their roots while fostering a sense of community.

For many, the 2024 Homowo Festival was a powerful reminder of the strength of tradition, as well as a joyous celebration of togetherness.
