The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has declared former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta a “wanted person and a fugitive from justice”.
This was declared at a press conference in Accra today as the former minister of Finance had repeatedly refused to honour invitations for questioning regarding ongoing investigations in which he is a suspect.
This comes after The Office of the Special Prosecutor denied any involvement in the raid at the residence of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.
On Tuesday, February 11, a group of individuals (some in military and police uniforms) raided Mr. Ofori-Atta’s house in cantonment. According to channel one news source, five in military uniforms, one in a police uniform, and the rest in plain clothes—carried out the raid. Instead the special prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng stated that the incident was staged by Mr. Ofori-Atta himself in an attempt to mislead the public
The former minister is wanted because of his involvement of the construction of the National Cathedral promised by the former President, Akufo-Addo. Mr Ofori Atta was the one who released state funds for the project.
In 2020, Ken Ofori-Atta on the request of President Akufo-Addo’s Chief of Staff, authorised the release of a gargantuan ¢142.7million for the national cathedral project.
Despite the release of these funds, the construction hangs in the balance as those in charge have allegedly mismanaged the funds.
It has also emerged that the board of trustees of the project led by Rev. Kusi Boateng, mishandled the bulk part of the funds. Mr Ofori-Atta has been blamed for releasing the funds without considering the value of money and accountability.
In the case of the GRA and SML, the finance minister is again accused by the public of going into a deal that has caused financial loss to the state.
In 2019, GRA executed a payment of over ₵1 billion to SML under the auspices of Mr. Ken Ofori Atta without the involvement of the Public Procurement Authority’s approval as the constitution demands.
Agyebeng said “The fugitive’s name is Kenneth Nana Yaw Ofori Atta. Mr Ofori-Atta is 66 years old. He was the minister of Finance of the republic between 2017 and 2024. Mr Ofori-Atta left the jurisdiction on or around 2 January 2025.On 24th January 2025, the OSP communicated to Mr Ofori-Atta that OSP considered him suspect in respect to four of the cases above. Mr Ofori-Atta was asked to attend in person on Monday 10th February 2025 at 10GMT for an interview…Mr Ofori-Atta instructed his lawyers to inform the OSP that he was out of the jurisdiction indefinitely on medical grounds
This latest turn of event marks a significant step of the OSP’s fight against corruption.
