As the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) gears up for its upcoming elections dated 26th April, 2025, speculation is rife about whether Ben Nunoo Mensah will seek a fourth term as an Exco and Board member.
Nunoo Mensah has been on the board of GOC administration since 2011, serving as both GOC Treasurer and President.
Under his leadership, the GOC has faced significant financial accountability challenges, which have been a subject of discussion at every General Assembly.
The Development Chief Of Ga State has failed to account for the money used on the Amasaman sports facility project.
Stakeholders have raised concerns over misappropriation of funds as the GOC received a whopping $100,000 grant from IOC and ANOCA and the OlympicAfrica Foundation.
Despite these challenges, Nunoo Mensah has been credited with transforming the Ghana Weightlifting Federation and leading the national team to win several medals at international competitions.
However, his tenure has also been marked by increased division amongst leadership within the GOC boards, control of the Secretariat, and function of the Sub-committees and the resignation of Farida.
In it’s last Congress , the GOC President appointed his own Auditor to Audit the account of the Ghana Olympic Committee which is against its own constitution.
This has raised concerns about whether his continuity will bring stability and sustained progress.
While some argue that fresh leadership could introduce new ideas and strategies for the future, others believe Nunoo Mensah deserves another term.
No Association has publicly endorsed Nunoo Mensah for another term yet.
As the GOC elections approach, the sports fraternity is eagerly waiting to see if Nunoo Mensah will declare his candidacy for a fourth term in the board.
The outcome of this election will shape the direction of Ghana’s Olympic movement for years to come, particularly in the lead-up to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Now the question is, is he losing grounds prior to the election.
Will Nunoo Mensah seek re-election, or will he pave the way for new leadership? Only time will tell.
