The El Wak Wings Ladies Volleyball Club is ramping up preparations for the prestigious African Club Championship, set to take place in Abuja, Nigeria, from April 1 to April 14, 2025.
The two-week tournament will see 21 of Africa’s top women’s volleyball clubs compete for continental supremacy, bragging rights, and attractive prizes.
Among the formidable lineup are Nigeria Customs Service, Egypt’s Al Ahly Sporting Club and Zamalek Sporting Club, Ghana’s El Wak Wings, AS Douanes Volleyball Club from Burundi, Sococim Volleyball of Senegal, and Volleyball Club La Grace from Cote d’Ivoire. Other contenders include Volleyball Club La Loi from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia’s National Alcohol and Liquor Factory, Tunisia’s Club Féminin de Carthage, and Cameroon’s Forces Armées et Police, Litto Team Volleyball, and Mayo Kane Evolution.
The roster is completed by Botswana’s Spiking Stars Volleyball Club, Benin’s Queens Volleyball Club, Rwanda’s Rwanda Revenue Authority Volleyball Club, Armée Patriotique Rwandaise Volleyball Club, and Police Volleyball Club, as well as three Kenyan powerhouses: Kenya Prisons Volleyball Club, Kenya Commercial Bank Volleyball Club, and Kenya Pipeline Company Volleyball Club.
Leading the Ghanaian charge is middle player Joana Mensah, as the El Wak Wings aim to make their mark on the continental stage.
However, the team faces significant financial hurdles to participate in this critical competition.
Appeal for Support
Team manager Divine Edem Dotse has issued an impassioned plea to corporate Ghana, the Ministry of Sports, and the public for financial assistance to cover flight tickets, accommodation, and meals in Abuja.
Speaking to the Media Dotse emphasized the tournament’s importance, not just for the club but for Ghanaian volleyball as a whole.
“We are feverishly preparing for the tournament, but we need financial support to make this trip possible. This is a must-attend event for us and the country to raise awareness about club volleyball in Ghana and give our national players vital exposure,” Dotse said.
He added that a strong showing could boost the rankings of Ghanaian volleyball clubs and enhance the sport’s visibility.
Dotse also underscored the national pride at stake: “El Wak Wings is representing Ghana, and we must do our best to raise the flag high. We need the support of all to save Ghana from missing this opportunity.” He further appealed directly to the President to ensure the team’s participation.
As the countdown to April 1 continues, the El Wak Wings Ladies are determined to showcase their talent and bring glory to Ghana – with the hope that the nation will rally behind them.
