Former General Secretary of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Richard Akpokavie, has officially announced his intention to contest for the presidency of the committee in the upcoming elections scheduled for April 26, 2025.
Speaking on his decision to run, Akpokavie highlighted his extensive experience within the GOC, having served as General Secretary for eight years.
He believes his tenure speaks for itself and is confident that his leadership can propel Ghana’s sporting landscape to greater heights.
“Right now, the journey has come to a place where I want to contest for the presidency of the Olympic Committee. I have served eight years as the General Secretary, and I think my performance is there for people to judge.
I am contesting so that we can reset Ghana football and move much higher not only in the Olympics but for the football fraternity as well,” he stated.
Acknowledging the efforts of the current leadership, Akpokavie emphasized the need for fresh ideas and renewed energy to drive progress in Ghanaian sports. “The current leaders have done their best, but we need new ideas and new blood to get things moving,” he added.
The GOC elections are expected to be highly competitive as the country’s sports stakeholders prepare to usher in new leadership that will shape the future of Ghana’s participation in international sporting events.
