The battle for the Ghana Olympic Committee Presidency: The second coming of Richard Akpokavie

The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC)announced its elective congress to select new executives for a four-year term on April
26, 2025. The decision was reached during an extraordinary congress held last Saturday at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Pitch in Accra.

The last GOC election was held in 2021 on March 16, where Ben Nunoo Mensah who served first them, was re-elected as president of the Ghana Olympic Committee by Congress at the Ghana Academy of
Arts and Science (CISR) Hall.

The former Ghana Weightlifting Federation president got 35 votes to beat former secretary general Richard Akpokavie who had 28 votes.

The current administration has been mixed of succusand failures.
Recently the heads of national
sports federations in Ghana called for an investigation into the allegedmisappropriation of $100,000 provided by Olympic Africa (ANOCA) for the
construction of sports facilities at the Amasaman Stadium.

Last week the former General Secretary and a contestant for the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) presidency in
2021, Richard Akpokavie, officially announced his intention to re-contest fort he presidency of the committee in the upcoming elections after falling to win
the 2021 election.

As it stands now he emerges as the first candidate to declare intent for the presidency position.
Last month, the Honorary President
of the Ghana hockey federation and currently GOC presidential hopeful Richard Akpokavie led the Ghana revenue authority (GRA) female hockey team, the Royal
Ladies to winning Gold at the just ended Africa Hockey Federation club for championship in Egypt.
Akpokavie, who declared intent for
the presidency position, has emphasized the need for fresh ideas and renewed energy to drive progress in Ghanaian sports. “The current leaders have
done their best, but we need new ideas and new blood to get things moving,” he added. Is the second coming
going to be a game-changing moment for the Ghana sports?
