The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), in collaboration with other stakeholders, has intercepted a container loaded with opioid drugs worth approximately GH₵20 million at the Tema Port.
Authorities disclosed that the consignment was en route to Niger as its final destination.
Addressing the media at a press briefing, Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh reaffirmed the government’s commitment to combating drug trafficking through Ghana’s
ports.
“Since we are interested in facilitating trade in this country, we will not allow Ghana to be a haven for
opioids. And let me tell you that the president is personally interested in this matter. On my way here, he called me twice, and it tells you how critical this particular issue is,” he stated.
The interception underscores Ghana’s intensified efforts to prevent illicit drug trade and safeguard its
borders against becoming a transit hub for narcotics.
Authorities have assured the public that investigations are ongoing to identify those behind the
shipment.
