El Wak Wings face financial hurdle in quest for African volleyball glory… Meets Sports Minister and NSD DG tomorrow

By Kwame Larweh

El Wak Wings, Ghana’s reigning volleyball powerhouse, stand on the brink of a historic moment. Having outshone top clubs—including formidable sides from the security services—to earn the right to represent Ghana at the 2025 Men’s African Volleyball Club Championship, the team’s dreams of continental glory now hang in the balance. With just over a week until their scheduled departure for Misurata, Libya, the club faces a daunting financial shortfall that threatens to ground their ambitions.

The championship, set to run from April 17 to April 30, will see 24 of Africa’s elite volleyball clubs battle it out in a thrilling round-robin format, followed by knockout rounds culminating in a grand final. For El Wak Wings, the tournament represents more than just a competition—it’s a chance to hoist the Ghanaian flag high, give their players vital international exposure, and cement their status as a core pillar of the national team. But without an urgent injection of funds, Ghana’s sole representative risks missing out on this prestigious stage.

A triumph against the odds

El Wak Wings earned their spot in the African spotlight with a stellar performance in the Greater Accra Men’s Volleyball League, securing an impressive second-place finish. Their journey to the top has been one of grit and determination, overcoming stiff competition from well-resourced clubs to claim the mantle of Ghana’s volleyball ambassadors. Now, they’re gearing up to depart on April 15, with their sights set on making a seismic impact in Libya.

Yet, beneath the excitement lies a sobering reality. The club needs at least $35,000 to cover travel, accommodation, and logistical expenses—a sum that remains elusive as the clock ticks down. “We are going to represent Ghana and bring glory to the nation,” said Mr. Divine Edem Dotse, the club’s founder, manager, and Chief Executive Officer, in an impassioned plea to the Daily Graphic. “Our players, who form the backbone of the national team, deserve this exposure. We need help.”

High-Stakes Meetings on the Horizon

In a bid to secure a lifeline, El Wak Wings have scheduled critical meetings this Wednesday with two key figures: the newly appointed Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr. Kofi Adams, and the Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah. The club hopes these discussions will unlock the financial bailout needed to make their Libyan odyssey a reality.

“We are appealing to the new Sports Minister to come to our aid and ensure we can represent Ghana in this tournament,” Dotse said, his voice carrying a mix of hope and urgency. With Mr. Adams only recently stepping into his role, this could be an early test of his commitment to elevating Ghanaian sports on the global stage.

A call to the nation

Beyond government support, Dotse has cast a wider net, urging corporate bodies and the public to rally behind the team. “We appeal to corporate agencies and individuals to come to our aid,” he said. “This is a chance to showcase Ghanaian talent and unity. Let’s not let it slip away.”

The stakes couldn’t be higher. The African Volleyball Club Championship is a proving ground for the continent’s best, and El Wak Wings are determined to leave their mark. A strong showing could not only boost the profile of volleyball in Ghana but also inspire a new generation of athletes. However, without the necessary backing, that vision risks being reduced to a footnote.

Time Running Out

As the April 15 departure date looms, the pressure is mounting. The team’s preparations are in full swing, but the uncertainty over funding casts a long shadow. For a club that has fought its way to the top through sheer determination, the prospect of missing out due to financial constraints is a bitter pill to swallow.

“We are ready to compete and make Ghana proud,” Dotse declared. “All we need is the support to get there.”

The ball is now in the court of Ghana’s government, corporate sector, and citizens. Will they step up to ensure El Wak Wings can take flight? Or will this golden opportunity slip through the nation’s fingers? With just days to go, the answer will define whether
