Richard Akpokavie Vows to Give Athletes a Voice on GOC Board

Mr. Richard Akpokavie, a Presidential hopeful for the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), has pledged to ensure that athletes are granted formal representation on the GOC Board.

Speaking on the need for inclusive decision-making, Mr. Akpokavie described the current absence of athlete representation as unfair and counterproductive. “Too often, decisions are made on behalf of athletes without their direct input,” he noted.

“It’s time their voices are heard. One of my key priorities is to secure a seat for athlete representatives at board meetings to ensure they are actively involved in decision-making.”

He stressed that athletes are the core of every sporting organization, and their exclusion from governance undermines the very purpose of sports leadership.

According to Akpokavie, including athletes at the decision-making table will promote more transparent, equitable, and athlete-focused policies.
This bold stance highlights his commitment to governance reform, athlete empowerment, and participatory leadership as he campaigns for the top position at the GOC.

Akpokavie’s vision signals a shift toward a more inclusive and accountable future for Ghanaian sports administration.

According to the presidential candidate, one of his key priorities is to establish a well-structured database containing detailed records of every athlete and federation under the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC).

This, he believes, will help curb issues such as visa fraud, especially during major events like the Olympic Games.

He further stated that he will take a firm stance against the misuse of the GOC letterhead for personal or unauthorized purposes, emphasizing the need for accountability and integrity within the organization.

The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), election is scheduled on April 26, 2025, as the new date for its much-anticipated elective Congress.
