Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Minister of Health presents equipment to the Tamale Teaching Hospital.

The Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has presented equipment to the Tamale Teaching Hospital in aid of the hospital’s operations despite the doctors going on strike.

The equipment was presented on Thursday, 24 April, 2025, as part of what the Ministry says is an effort to improve service delivery at the hospital, which serves as a major referral centre in the northern side of Ghana. This was aimed at tackling persistent logistical and resource challenges faced by the hospital, which recently made headlines following industrial action by its medical staff over poor working conditions and an altercation with the Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.

The items include five ECG machines, two Vinno Ultrasound Scanners with accessories, four defibrillators, two infant incubators, six ICU cardiac monitors, and multiple ventilators including Vyaire ICU, Drager ICU, and transport ventilators.

During the presentation, Mr Akandoh told journalists that “this support is intended to help the hospital continue to provide services to patients who rely on it,”. He also acknowledged the difficult working conditions health professionals continue to endure and emphasized that government efforts alone would not be enough to resolve systemic issues.

He called for unity across the health sector and urged all stakeholders, including medical doctors, nurses, and pharmacists, to work together to ensure that the country’s limited resources are used efficiently.

The Doctors’ Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital (DATTH) recently suspended emergency and outpatient services due to a confrontation between Mr Akandoh and the head of the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department during the minister’s unannounced visit on Tuesday and the dismissal of the Chief Executive Officer of the hospital

They have since then demanded better working conditions and an apology from Mr Akandoh and the Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Mr Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini.

They are also calling for better working conditions, including regular water and power supply, adequate oxygen, and the consistent availability of medical consumables.
